BETTER PENSACOLA FORUM RELEASES 2010 "QUALITY OF LIFE" VOTER SURVEY RESULTS

Poll reflects how area residents feel about living in Pensacola

For the first time in three years of polling, Escambia County voters think that both the County and the City of Pensacola are headed in the right direction

PENSACOLA, Fla. (August 5, 2010) - Better Pensacola Forum today released the results from its 2010 Quality of Life survey of area voters, conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research. The results, available for preview on the Better Pensacola Forum Web site at www.betterpensacola.org, show a positive trend in voter attitudes over the past 12 months.

Jerry Maygarden, executive director of Better Pensacola Forum, says the survey is an important tool that can be used to help improve the quality of life for Escambia County residents, adding "We conduct the annual surveys and provide the data to equip decision makers with information on what is most important to the people who live here."

Conducted annually for the past three years, the Quality of Life survey is a compilation of the opinions of 800 registered voters in Escambia County, who are chosen at random. Better Pensacola Forum began conducting the annual surveys in 2008 to identify a benchmark of public opinion, to track and trend voter concerns and issues of importance and to provide these insights to the leadership of the area.

Larry Harris, principal at Mason-Dixon Polling & Research, supervised the polling process and believes the survey results show that voters have gained confidence in the direction the community is headed, saying: "Voters are responding positively to the change in the charter for the City of Pensacola and will soon elect a stronger and more accountable city government. Voters have also witnessed the approval, funding, progress and groundbreaking for a signature economic development effort on the city's waterfront which has resulted in an increase in the number and percentage of those who say that they are 'familiar with and have confidence in the vision, plans and leadership for the revitalization' of their community."

Mason-Dixon is an independent polling firm that has conducted public policy and political polling and research for news media, advocacy groups, trade associations, public relations and marketing professionals, across the United States, since 1983. Mason-Dixon has earned the reputation as the most credible and accurate independent polling firm in the nation.

For the first time in three years of polling, a majority of Escambia County voters think that both the County and the City of Pensacola are headed in the right direction. This is a positive turn-around from the 2009 survey which mirrored 2008 results in finding a community somewhat anxious about local leadership and the general direction in which the community was headed.

Of the 2010 findings, Maygarden stated, "Voters are responding positively this year. Yes, voters feel anxious and some still feel dissatisfied, but there are significant positive trends and improvements this year."

Maygarden believes that the survey provides "a collective voice of the community," giving residents with an opportunity to tell elected officials what issues are important to them.
